Former Vietnam POW William L. Shankel

In this episode, an article from the Bristol Press titled: Prime Time: In the Briar Patch, ‘all the guys suffered’ submitted by Bob Montgomery is featured. It tells about William L. Shankel, a former Vietnam POW, who spoke at a gathering at the former Marinelli‚Äôs restaurant in Burlington. Shankel’s story is an amazing recounting of the bravery the POW’s showed just to survive the harsh conditions they were subjected to by their North Vietnamese captors.

  1. Thank you for Bill Shankel’s story. I am a retired OR nurse from Kauai who feels privledged and proud to know Bill (and Maryann his late wife) and call him friend. He, like my Vietnam vet husband, rarely speaks of his past, but occasionally will share a small bit with me. Again, thank you for your efforts to chronicle his story.
PS. He had proudly shown his pistol to us
