The Healing Box Project

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is a big problem for many Vietnam Vets. Psychologists believe it is a possible manifestation befalling a person who experiences extreme trauma or life threatening events like getting one’s butt shot off. The people who study such things say around 11 percent of Vietnam Veterans continue to experience the malady. Psychological studies indicate that the number of Vietnam Veterans still suffering to this day could be as high as 271,000.

The school solutions for PTSD by the VA include Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Drugs are another remedy used by the VA for PTSD suffers. One drug favored by the VA is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). SSRIs include citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (such as Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft). The VA cannot offer assurance that any of the methods currently being used can cure PTSD.

There is a gentleman out in Columbia, Missouri who has a program for PTSD sufferers that has proven to be 100 % effective in providing positive relief from this terrible condition. His name is Dave Dunklee who along with his wife CJ runs the Healing Box Project at the Truman VA Hospital in Columbia. Dave is a retired music teacher and he has devised a program that works every time in helping PTSD sufferers.

His simple but effective program is amazing. He presents every new member of his program a brand new name brand guitar and then proceeds to teach the veteran to play the instrument in five minutes with his unique teaching process. His results are astounding. He can point to many of his students who were on the verge of suicide and they were saved from that dreadful fate by a guitar and the ability to strum a few tunes.
