Without hesitation, Roark threw himself onto the grenade, absorbing the full explosion with his body. His selfless act saved his comrades but cost him his life.
For his gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his own life, Sergeant Roark was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration. His sacrifice embodied the Army values of duty, honor, and selfless service.
