Navy Corpsman David R. Ray, a Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient, embodied extraordinary bravery under fire. Serving with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, he found himself in a ferocious battle near Phu Loc, South Vietnam, on March 19, 1969.

As the enemy launched a relentless assault, Ray sprang into action, treating wounded Marines under heavy fire. Despite mortal danger, he moved between casualties, administering lifesaving aid. Suddenly, enemy soldiers broke through, threatening his injured comrades. Armed with only his sidearm and unwavering courage, Ray engaged in close-quarters combat, neutralizing several attackers.

Although wounded, he refused evacuation, continuing to defend and treat his fellow Marines. As an enemy soldier rushed forward with a grenade, Ray threw himself on the explosive, absorbing the full force to shield his comrades. His selfless sacrifice saved countless lives.

For his gallantry and unwavering devotion, David R. Ray was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. His legacy endures through the USS David R. Ray (DD-971), a Navy destroyer bearing his name, and in the hearts of those who serve.

Ray exemplified the Navy Corpsman ethos—”So others may live.” His heroism in Vietnam stands as a testament to the valor, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of those who serve in combat medicine.
