Army Sergeant William D. Port was a true hero of the Vietnam War, earning the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary bravery in combat. Born in Petersburg, Pennsylvania, in 1941, SGT Port served with Company C, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) during the conflict.
On January 12, 1968, near Que Son, Vietnam, SGT Port and his unit came under intense enemy fire from North Vietnamese Army (NVA) forces. Amid the chaotic battle, he and his comrades were pinned down, fighting for their lives. As enemy fire rained upon them, a grenade landed dangerously close to their position. Without hesitation, SGT Port selflessly threw himself onto the grenade, absorbing the blast to save his fellow soldiers. Miraculously, though severely wounded, he survived the explosion.
Despite his injuries, SGT Port was captured by enemy forces and endured brutal conditions as a Prisoner of War (POW). He was later listed as Missing in Action (MIA) before being officially declared deceased. His unwavering courage and sacrifice were recognized posthumously when he was awarded the Medal of Honor on December 17, 1973.
SGT William D. Port’s valor, selflessness, and ultimate sacrifice embody the highest ideals of military service. His legacy lives on through his Medal of Honor citation, ensuring that future generations remember his heroism on the battlefield of Vietnam.
