Despite intense enemy fire, he immediately took command, directing his men with fearless determination. When two enemy machine guns pinned down his unit, Ray charged forward, destroying the first position with grenades and silencing the second with rifle fire.

Wounded multiple times, Ray refused evacuation and continued to fight. Spotting an enemy rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) team, he single-handedly eliminated them, preventing a deadly attack on his platoon. Ignoring his injuries, he led a counterattack, rallying his troops to repel the Viet Cong assault. His gallant leadership and unwavering courage turned the tide of battle, saving countless lives.

For his selfless valor and extraordinary heroism, Ronald E. Ray was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Richard Nixon. His actions in Vietnam exemplify the highest traditions of U.S. Army service, embodying duty, honor, and sacrifice.
