During a combat patrol, Sloat’s squad moved through dense jungle terrain when an enemy booby trap, a hand grenade, was tripped. The grenade landed near Sloat and his fellow soldiers. His gallant sacrifice saved the lives of at least four soldiers.

For his unparalleled courage and self-sacrifice, Specialist Four Donald Sloat was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama on September 15, 2014.
