Serving as a platoon sergeant with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Smith and his men came under intense enemy fire from a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) unit.

When the enemy breached their position, Smith eliminated several enemy soldiers at close range. Though wounded again, he continued to call for supporting fire, ensuring his unit could hold the line. His courageous stand ultimately cost him his life, but his actions enabled his fellow soldiers to repel the attack.
For his conspicuous gallantry, Sergeant First Class Elmelindo Rodrigues Smith was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States military’s highest decoration.
