The County Commission presents $100,000 to the local chapter of Vietnam Veterans to go towards a Veterans Park.
Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1148 was honored by the Campbell County Commission at Monday’s commission meeting.

Underwood reported that the recognition of Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1148 during the Campbell County Commission meeting was a fitting tribute to a remarkable group of Americans whose service and sacrifice continue to strengthen their community decades after the Vietnam War. The chapter, honored by County Mayor Jack Lynch with an official proclamation, represents 140 dedicated members whose shared experiences in Vietnam have been transformed into a lifelong commitment to serving fellow veterans and their neighbors.
Mayor Lynch praised the chapter as a “beacon of service and dedication,” highlighting its efforts to organize outings that provide friendship, encouragement, and support for veterans. Chapter 1148 has become one of the fastest-growing Vietnam Veterans organizations in the nation, demonstrating that the spirit of service never ends for those who wore the uniform.
The chapter also works tirelessly to ensure that Vietnam veterans receive the honor they earned. From displaying veteran banners throughout downtown LaFollette to placing American flags at memorials every Memorial Day, members make certain that the sacrifices of their brothers and sisters in arms are never forgotten.
Their commitment extends beyond veterans. Through scholarships awarded to students at Campbell County High School and Jellico High School, Chapter 1148 invests in the next generation, proving that patriotism includes building a stronger future.
Adding to the celebration, the county presented the chapter with a $100,000 contribution toward the construction of the new Veterans Park in Caryville. Led by Vietnam veteran H.R. Douglas, the project will feature a towering 60-foot flagpole flying a massive 12-by-24-foot American flag overlooking Interstate 75.
The accomplishments of Chapter 1148 reflect the greatness of America’s Vietnam veterans—men and women whose courage in war has been matched by decades of leadership, compassion, and unwavering devotion to their communities.
