This year’s regional commemoration in Myrtleford, Victoria, will bring together Vietnam veterans and supporters from Myrtleford, Beechworth, Benalla, Bright, Kiewa, Mount Beauty, Wangaratta, and Wodonga to honor Australia’s Vietnam War heroes and preserve their remarkable legacy for future generations.
Observed each year on 18 August, Vietnam Veterans’ Day coincides with the historic Battle of Long Tan, one of the greatest military victories in Australian history. On that day in 1966, a small force of courageous Australian soldiers displayed extraordinary bravery, determination, and professionalism while overcoming overwhelming enemy numbers. Their heroism at Long Tan became a defining moment in Australia’s military history and remains an enduring symbol of the fighting spirit of Australian Vietnam Veterans.
The Myrtleford RSL Sub-Branch will host commemorative ceremonies beginning with a gathering at the RSL clubrooms before veterans and guests proceed to the Albert David Lowerson VC Memorial Cenotaph for a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, the Ode, and the Last Post. A Vietnam Veterans’ Day address by RSL Victoria senior state vice president Des Callaghan OAM, BJ, JP, will follow, providing an opportunity for reflection and fellowship among veterans, families, and supporters.
The ceremony also honors the 521 Australians who gave their lives during the Vietnam War and recognizes the service of approximately 60,000 Australian military personnel, including both Regular Army and National Service members. Their sacrifice helped uphold Australia’s proud military tradition of courage, mateship, and service above self.
As Australians gather to remember Long Tan and Vietnam Veterans’ Day, they pay tribute to a generation whose courage, resilience, and commitment to freedom continue to inspire people around the world. The legacy of the Battle of Long Tan and Australia’s Vietnam veterans will never be forgotten.
