The Canberra ceremony also encouraged a deeper examination of the myths and realities of the Battle of Long Tan. Brigadier Kevin O’Brien’s research challenges long-repeated claims about enemy numbers and casualties, demonstrating why historical events must be examined carefully and honestly. His work does not diminish the intensity or courage displayed by Australian troops; instead, it provides a clearer understanding of what actually happened.
Long Tan also raises important questions about the broader Australian involvement in Vietnam from 1962 to 1973. The battle may have been considered a military victory, but the larger war demonstrated that military strength alone could not determine the ultimate outcome.
Most importantly, the 60th anniversary remembrance emphasized that Vietnam Veterans Day is about remembering people—not simply battles or victories. It is about honoring the fallen, respecting veterans, remembering civilians who suffered, and learning from history.
