Larry Rhodes, Indiana Rangers

Noel reported that the greatness of our Vietnam Veterans was once again honored as the 151st Infantry Regiment of the Indiana National Guard, known proudly as the Indiana Rangers, received the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary service during the Vietnam War. The award is considered the highest honor a military unit can receive, recognizing the courage, sacrifice, and combat excellence demonstrated by American soldiers under some of the most demanding conditions of the war.
At the National Guard Association of the United States conference, 45 veterans from the original 212-member unit gathered to receive this long-overdue recognition. Among them was Larry Rhodes, who served with the company for 11 months and experienced firsthand the dangers of combat in the Vietnamese jungle.
Rhodes recalled carrying an M-60 machine gun while operating deep in the jungle. The Indiana Rangers specialized in long-range reconnaissance patrols, jungle warfare, surveillance, and ambush missions. Small teams of approximately six soldiers would move quietly through dangerous territory, locate trails, establish concealed positions, and monitor enemy movement for days at a time. Silence, patience, courage, and teamwork were essential to survival.
After returning home, Rhodes and many other Vietnam veterans quietly resumed civilian life. Yet they never forgot the brothers with whom they served. Rhodes continues to stay connected with fellow veterans while remembering those who have passed away.
Receiving the Presidential Unit Citation decades after the Vietnam War was an emotional moment. Many veterans were nearly speechless, overwhelmed by the significance of finally being recognized for their service and sacrifice.
Rhodes has one simple message for America: “Don’t just let the public forget us.”
That message should resonate with every generation. The Vietnam Veteran generation served when America needed them, endured hardship, carried the memories of war home, and continued forward with dignity. Their service, sacrifice, courage, and patriotism must never be forgotten. The Indiana Rangers—and all Vietnam Veterans—deserve our lasting respect, gratitude, and honor.
