Joseph A. “Andy” Fry – Distinguished Professor Emeritus

Andy Pham is a good friend of this podcast. In the past he has brought distinguished authors to the podcast who talk about their writings which help expand our knowledge about the Vietnam War. This is important because anytime we have an event in our history that led to the creation of a black marble walled memorial in Washington, D. C. with 58,281 names etched upon its walls of Americans who died for their country in that event.
Joseph A. (Andy) Fry is a distinguished professor of history emeritus. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1970 and 1974 and his B.A. from Davis and Elkins College in 1969. He joined the UNLV faculty in 1975 and retired in December 2013. He taught courses on U.S. foreign relations, history of the American South after 1850, U.S. involvement in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and the U.S. history survey.
Joseph A. Fry’s Letters from the Southern Home Front explores the diversity of public opinion on the Vietnam War within the American South. Fry examines correspondence sent by hundreds of individuals, of differing ages, genders, racial backgrounds, political views, and economic status, reflecting a broad swath of the southern population. These letters, addressed to high-profile political figures and influential newspapers, took up a myriad of war-related issues. Their messages enhance our understanding of the South and the United States as a whole as we continue to grapple with the significance of this devastating and divisive conflict.
