On the dark waters of the Mekong River in Vietnam, Navy Seaman David George Ouellet stood on the deck of the River Patrol Boat (PBR) 124. It was March 6, 1967, and the dense jungle loomed like a wall on either side of the swift patrol boat. Tension hung in the air; every shadow could hide the enemy.

Suddenly, the ambush came. A grenade arced through the air, landing in the midst of Ouellet and his crewmates. Without hesitation, he shouted a warning, “Grenade!” Time slowed, and the choice was clear—life or sacrifice.

In a split-second decision, Ouellet threw himself onto the grenade, his body shielding his fellow sailors from the full force of the blast. The explosion rocked the deck, and his crewmates were knocked back, but their lives were saved. David George Ouellet, at just 22 years old, had given everything to protect those beside him.

Posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, Ouellet’s act of valor symbolized the ultimate selflessness. His courage resonated far beyond the Mekong Delta, inspiring future generations of sailors and Americans to uphold the values of duty, loyalty, and sacrifice.

Today, his name is etched in the annals of history and in the hearts of all who honor true heroism. His sacrifice reminds us that even in the chaos of war, humanity’s greatest strength is found in its willingness to serve and protect others, no matter the cost.
