Episode 3105 of the Vietnam Veteran News Podcast will feature a story about Vietnam Vet Robert Stewart of Belton, Texas. The featured story appeared in the Fort Hood Herald and was titled: Central Texas native Robert Stewart drafted for service in Vietnam; flew aboard recent Honor Flight Austin. The story was submitted by John Clark, a Herald Correspondent.
Robert Earl “Buddy” Stewart, a proud Vietnam veteran, has lived a life marked by hard work, humility, and service to his country and community. Born in rural Central Texas and raised in Rogers, Stewart graduated high school in 1959 and went straight to work, eventually joining the Santa Fe Railroad in 1960. Just a few years into his railroad career, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served with distinction during the early years of the Vietnam War.
Though initially unaware of the conflict brewing in Southeast Asia, Stewart soon found himself deployed in 1965 as an infantryman. His skill and initiative earned him a special assignment as a telephone operator for a battalion commander—a role that likely saved his life during a time of growing unrest in Vietnam. His five-month tour, though relatively brief, left a lasting impact on him.
Returning stateside in 1966, Stewart resumed his 42-year railroad career, retiring as a freight train conductor. His military service, though not long, deeply shaped his sense of responsibility, discipline, and patriotism. In 2025, he was honored with an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., where he visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial—a profoundly emotional experience that underscored his enduring bond with fellow veterans.
Today, Stewart remains active in his community: playing dominoes, volunteering at his church’s food bank, and maintaining a regular gym routine. His legacy is one of quiet dedication—to his country, his family, and the values that shaped his generation.
