The 10th annual event in Bullard continues to grow as one of the region’s premier gatherings to honor military service and sacrifice. (Jennifer Scott/Tyler Morning Telegraph)
Episode 3106 of the Vietnam Veteran News Podcast will feature a story about what the good people of Bullard, Texas did to honor Vietnam Veteran Medal of Honor recipients. The featured story appeared in the Tyler Morning Telegraph and was titled: ‘A national treasure’: Bullard welcomes Medal of Honor recipients for 10th annual military show. The story was submitted by Jennifer Scott
Scott reported that a powerful tribute was held this past Saturday to honor Vietnam Veterans, highlighting their courage, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of their service. The day began with a heartfelt parade from Tyler to Bullard, led by the Patriot Guard and featuring veterans riding in military vehicles. The event continued at the American Freedom Museum with a 21-gun salute, a WWII aircraft flyover, and interactive exhibits showcasing restored military vehicles.
Central to the event was the presence of several Medal of Honor recipients—true national heroes who risked everything for their fellow soldiers. Among them were retired Colonel Don Ballard and Sgt. Bob Patterson, both recognized for extraordinary bravery during the Vietnam War. Ballard, who once threw himself on a grenade to protect others, emphasized that he wears his medal not for himself, but to honor the fallen and the value of freedom. Patterson echoed the sentiment, calling veterans “the most important thing the country has right now.”
Other recipients, including Staff Sgt. Melvin Morris and Marine Capt. James Livingston, shared stories of courage under fire. Their presence served as a living reminder of the cost of freedom and the heroism often hidden behind the trauma of war.
But honoring veterans is not just about medals or ceremonies. Many still carry invisible scars and struggle silently. Events like these offer healing, connection, and public recognition they often lack.
Our Vietnam Veterans are a national treasure. Their service, sacrifice, and stories must never be forgotten. Honoring them isn’t just respectful—it’s essential. It reminds us all that the freedoms we enjoy were paid for with immense courage, and that we owe these heroes more than just gratitude—we owe them remembrance.
