Chaplain John Winfrey said this about his Vietnam Vet friend Conrad Joseph Landry, Jr. On October 7, 2025, I had the honor of speaking at the Memorial Service of Conrad Joseph Landry, Jr., a proud United States Sea Bee, Vietnam Veteran, and genuine American hero. Conrad represented the very best of those who served during one of the most difficult wars in our nation’s history. Like so many Vietnam Veterans, he carried the scars of battle—both seen and unseen—but he lived his life with dignity, humor, and kindness.

I first met Conrad when he came by the Legion handing out vegetables from his garden—a small act that perfectly captured his generous spirit. He was instantly likeable, the kind of man both children and adults were drawn to. He loved to laugh and had a natural gift for storytelling, often keeping everyone entertained with his endless jokes and perfect comedic timing. Yet beneath that laughter was the heart of a warrior who had witnessed the unimaginable.

During the Tet Offensive, Conrad faced horrific scenes that haunted him for the rest of his life. Still, he endured with quiet courage, embodying the resilience shared by so many Vietnam Veterans. These men and women carried the weight of war long after returning home, often without the recognition they deserved.

Conrad’s life reminds us of the greatness of all who served in Vietnam—ordinary Americans who performed extraordinary acts of service, sacrifice, and compassion. His memory, like theirs, stands as a testament to courage, brotherhood, and the enduring power of a good man’s heart.
